چکیده

expertise, human-computer interaction, cognitive biases, estimation accuracy Experts are often called upon to design interfaces, applications, and instruments for novices. But, there are reasons to believe that expertise may inhibit peoples’ ability to understand the novice experience. Data from one study suggests that experts suffer from a cognitive bias that leads them to underestimate the difficulty that novices will encounter when performing an unfamiliar task. The data also suggest that experts’ bias toward underestimation is resistant to a commonly used debiasing technique – listing the steps required to perform a task and listing some of the problems that could occur when novices attempt a task for the first time. These results reinforce the importance of including multiple perspectives in the design process and making sure that expert designers work to understand the perspective of their novice users. The results also suggest that simply reading usability reports on the problems experienced by novices may not be adequate to debias experts. It may be necessary to create better ways to facilitate experts’ understanding of novices’ experience.

The Curse of Expertise: The Effects of Expertise and Debiasing Methods on Predictions of Novice Performance

Experts are often called on to predict the performance of novices, but cognitive heuristics may interfere with experts' ability to capitalize on their superior knowledge hi predicting novice task performance. In Study 1, experts, intermediate users, and novices predicted the time it would take novices to complete a complex task. In Study 2, expertise was experimentally manipulated. In both stud...

Comparing Novice and Expert User Inputs in Early Stage Product Design

This research examines similarities and differences between expert and novice user inputs during early stage concept design and ideation. Using a mixed-methods approach, we obtained and analyzed user inputs from 18 nurses (9 novices and 9 experts) for the design of an intramuscular drug delivery system. Users completed semi-structured interviews and two questionnaires to document design inputs ...

From novice to expert: the effect of tutorials on user expertise with spoken dialogue systems

One of the challenges for the current state of the art in spoken dialogue systems is how to make the limitations of the system apparent to users. These limitations have many sources: limited vocabulary, limited grammar, or limitations in the application domain. This study explored the use of a 4-minute tutorial session to acquaint novice users with the features of a spoken dialogue system for a...
